The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has been revising the deadline for travelers to get a Real ID for years now. This time they really mean it. Starting in 8 days travelers over 18 years old will need a Real ID or valid passport to pass through TSA security at U.S. airports, even if you have TSA PreCheck. Don’t risk missing a trip because you don’t have a Real ID or forgot to bring your passport. Keep reading to learn the new rules.
What’s a Real ID?
A Real ID is a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card issued by your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV.) Starting May 7 you’ll need a valid passport or Real ID to board U.S. commercial flights and access some federal facilities such as U.S. Military installations. Check for a “star” symbol on the upper right corner of your card to verify if it’s compliant. Some states issue Real ID enhanced cards when you renew your driver’s license or ID card.
Steps to Getting a Real ID:
- If you have a valid passport, check the expiration date. If it’s valid through the duration of any anticipated air travel, you can wait to apply for a Real ID. Actually, you don’t need a Real ID as long as your passport is valid. But it’s best to have both in case you neglect to renew, misplace or forget to bring your passport to the airport.
- Check the Department of Homeland Security website for the latest Real ID information. Kids under 18 don’t need a Real ID as long as they are accompanied by an adult with a Real ID or a valid passport. And it’s a good idea to remind other travel companions, like grandma and grandpa, to bring their Real ID or valid passport.
- Check your state’s DMV website to see if you can print or fill out a Real ID application online. While you’re there, check the list of documents required. Pay special attention to the type of documents they will accept. Most require original documents or certified copies.
- Requirements can differ, but be prepared to bring the following to your local DMV:
__Your application, if you were able to fill it out ahead of time
__Two proofs of residency
__Proof of Social Security number
__Proof of identity such as your passport or birth certificate
__Cash, check or a credit card to pay the fee - Make an appointment with your DMV online or by phone. At this late date it may be hard to get an appointment by May 7. If you have a valid passport, consider waiting. If your passport is valid long enough wait until it’s time to renew your license or ID. You have to go to the DMV anyway, so why not “kill two birds with one stone?” Either way, if your application is approved you’ll receive a temporary ID to use until they send your Real ID.
